Let’s say you were assigned 10 tasks.
You did 7 of them well, while the other 3 did not go so well.
Is that a failure?
If your answer is yes, then you’re someone who holds high standards for themselves.
While that can be helpful, it can also sometimes be detrimental to our well-being and overall growth.
When we obsess over a 10/10, we shudder at the sight of a mistake.
This can mean several things:
- We forget to acknowledge what we’ve done well
- We keep thinking about what we did wrong
- We feel scared to take risks or try new things
- We may not start something because we worry it won’t be perfect
- Eventually, we may get burned out
These problems can show up in the workplace.
Whether it’s writing an email, making a spreadsheet or preparing for a client meeting.
Growth is a constant process of learning and changing.
A way to think about our growth is by thinking of a garden.
In a garden, you need to water the flowers and remove the weeds.
If you fail to do either of those things, the growth is incomplete.
For us, the flowers in our mind are the things we do well.
We need to acknowledge them and help them grow.
The weeds are things we want to get rid of.
Here, we need to be patient and move away from our obsession with 10/10.
