How To Practice The Art Of Detachment

Detachment means disconnecting from things that are of less importance, in order to accomplish the heights of what we as human can achieve.

In short, it means that you can achieve the greatest heights only by detaching yourself from the things that matter to you at a certain extent by taking a step back. The important thing to remember here is that you should be able to practice detachment as and when required so that you don’t feel mentally fatigued. It means that you should not always be detached away from everything either.

To be able to detach ourselves, emotionally and behaviourally from our work, the first step is to simply accept what had happened and learn from it. Following are a few of more strategies which can help us in practicing detachment easily:

  • Make the Most of Your Peak-Time: The time when you feel the most productive is known as your peak-time. Since, every individual works around a different clock, they each have their own productive hours. Instead of wasting this highly productive time in baseless things, try focusing all your attention on the urgent and most important task at hand.

  • You Are More Than Your Work: Always remember that you are more valuable than your work. Detaching from your work gives you a sense of completeness and it provides a meaning to your life, thus it is important to embrace other roles in your life, including your relationships with other people and your hobbies. It is the ability to detach from your work that will make you better at what you do for a living.

  • Switch-Off Technology Around You: Most of us, our work revolves around staring at computer desktop screens for the longest of the day. This has made all of us become dependent on technology and we cannot seem to take our minds off our phones. We need Digital Detoxification in order to have a healthier and better lifestyle around us.

  • Relaxation Techniques: It helps in increasing positive emotions and reduces certain levels of stress. But to feel completely at ease and relaxed, you will have to incorporate relaxing techniques in your daily routine.
    • Exercise: Moving around, taking a walk, or simply doing a few stretches that help in cooling down your steam. It is helpful when you want something to distract your mind from. Exercising has certain benefits like it helps you be in shape, remain fit and also help maintain a healthy diet. You can always find online apps or YouTube videos that can help you in exercising better. There are different apps available for males and females where you can have personalized exercises, one such app is 30 days workout challenge.
    • Meditation: It helps to improve our awareness and it makes us mindful. Meditation has been proven to help people sleep better and improve their memory retention. Apps like Zifcare, Calm, and Smiling Mind have good meditation resources that can help you relax and make you focus on your breathing.
    • Creating A Buffer Zone For 30 Minutes: When you are done with your working hours for the day, for you to do what you like to do to feel relaxed, like listening to some relaxing music, or taking a cold shower, etc.

  • Sleep: Sleep is as important to adults as it is to young children. On an average, an adult human needs around 7-9 hours of sleep to function productively. Staying up late and wasting your deep sleep cycle by not giving rest to your eyes will cause disruptions in your everyday quality sleep cycle.

  • Re-Connect: Re-connect with everything and everyone you lost on your way to become where you are today. Re-connect with yourself, your hobbies, your family, friends, etc. Spending time with them helps in recharging our batteries.

  • Focus On Your Diet: We all have heard the phrase, ‘you become what you eat’. Whatever we eat can affect how we feel, and in the longer run consuming a lot of unhealthy snacks can lead to many health issues. Having a balanced diet with appropriate amount of proteins, and carbohydrates is as important as consuming 7-8 litres of water daily. Even though there are certain benefits in consuming coffee (caffeine), if you have any health issues, it is suggested that you should not drink coffee more than 1 cup a day.

  • Set Boundaries: Maintaining your health is as important as doing your job. It is important to realize that setting boundaries is not a harmful thing. You should always set appropriate boundaries so that you don’t over-commit yourself while working.

Conclusion

Once you start detaching yourself from things that hardly matter, you start giving your attention to important things and people in your life that will bring your growth. Letting the things that you feel passionate about dictate your mood, your energy levels and your overall enthusiasm towards life is not a healthy approach as it suggests that you are not entirely in control of your life. You let external sources control your life.

It’s time we start connecting with the people we’ve lost contacts with. You can learn from your past mistakes and let it reflect on yourself. Pay attention to your accomplishments rather than your failures. Make yourself feel good about them. Connect with your goals, prioritize what comes first. Staying connected releases oxytocin in our body making we feel happy, it makes us feel good about ourselves!
